Vinay Malika (Kis Bidhi Reejhat Hau Prabhu)

Sewadar

In this humble and heartfelt composition from Vinay Malika, Dayabai Ji expresses complete surrender before God. The soul cries before the Divine with deep helplessness, admitting its weaknesses, mistakes, and inability to cross the fearful ocean of worldly existence through personal effort alone. Again and again, the devotee prays for God’s mercy, believing that only His grace can free the soul from karma, ignorance, and the endless cycle of birth and death.

Kis bidhi reejhat hau Prabhu, ka kahi terun naath,
Lahar mehar jab heen karo, tab heen houn sanaath.
How can I please you? How should I beseech you, my Lord?
When you send a wave of mercy, only then will I be yours, O Master.
Pairat thaako he Prabhu, soojhat vaar na paar,
Mehar mauj jab heen karo, tab paaun darbaar.
Swimming incessantly, I have exhausted myself, O Lord, yet there appears no shore in sight;
only when you shower mercy will I gain entrance to your court.
Karm roop dariyaav se, leejai mohin bachaay,
Charan kamal tar raakhiye, mehar jahaaj chadhaay.
Save me, O Lord, from the sea of karma;
grant me refuge in your lotus feet and put me on the ship of your mercy.
Jaise sooraj ke uday, sakal timir nas jaay,
Mehar tumhaari he Prabhu, kyon agyaan rahaay.
Just as darkness is dispelled at the break of dawn,
how can ignorance remain when you shower your grace, O Lord?
Ber ber chookat gayon, deejai gusa bisaar,
Miharbaan hoi raavare, meri or nihaar.
Time and again, I have gone astray; please do not be angry with me.
Show your mercy, my Lord, cast your benevolent gaze upon me.
Chauraasi charkhaan ko, dukh saho nahin jaay,
Dayaadaas taaten lai, saran tihaari aay.
The misery of the eighty-four and the four modes of birth is truly unbearable;
thus Daya, the devotee, has come to your refuge.
Karm faans chhootai nahin, thakit bhayo bal mor,
Ab ki ber ubaari lo, Thaakur bandeechhor.
The noose of karma cannot be severed; I have completely exhausted myself.
Liberate me this time, O Lord, the saviour of all.
Jo mere karman lakho, tau nahin hot ubaar,
Dayaadaas par daya kari, deejai chook bisaar.
If you take my deeds into account, then I shall never be saved;
have mercy on Daya, the devotee, and overlook all her faults.
Nahi sanjam nahin saadhana, nahin teerath brat daan,
Maat bharose rahat hai, jyon baalak naadaan.
I know nothing of disciplines, meditation, pilgrimage, fasting, or charity;
I am like an innocent child who is totally dependent on its mother.
Teri dis aasa lagi, bhramat phiraun sab deep,
Svaanti milai sanaath ho, jaise chaatrik seep.
In my longing to meet you, I have been wandering everywhere.
Just as the rainbird and the oyster are fulfilled by swanti drops, meet me, O Lord, and make my life complete.
Loha paaras ke nikat, kanchan hi so hoy,
Jitna chaahai lai karai, loha kahai na koy.
Iron is transformed into gold by the touch of the philosopher's stone;
no matter how hard one may try, it will never be called iron again.
Bhavajal nadi bhayaavani kis bidhi utarun paar,
Saahib meri araj hai, suniye baarambaar.
The ocean of existence is terrifying indeed, how do I go across?
Come to my aid, O Lord, I plead again and again.
Thag paapi kapati kutil, ye lachchhan mohin maahin,
Jaiso taiso ter hi, aru kaahoo ko naahin.
A thug, a sinner, deceitful and devious, these are my traits.
Whatever I am, I am yours; I do not belong to anyone else.
Pooja archan bandagi, nahin sumiran nahin dhyaan,
Prabhuji ab raakhe bane, bird baane ki kaan.
Neither have I worshipped or meditated nor have I remembered or contemplated on you.
O Lord, to preserve the honour of your glory, you will have to redeem me now.
Haun anaath tohin binay kari, bhay son karun pukaar,
Dayaadaas tan her Prabhu, ab ke paar utaar.
An orphan I am, I plead before you; in fear, I call out to you, O Lord,
turn your gaze for a moment on Daya, the devotee; ferry her across this time.
Teen lok mein he Prabhu, tum heen karo so hoy,
In the three worlds, O Lord, whatever you will, only that comes to pass;
humans, sages, celestial beings, even the gods, none can alter your bidding.

Spiritual Insight

The Shabad teaches that true spirituality begins with humility, honesty, and dependence on Divine Grace rather than pride in rituals or personal achievements. Dayabai Ji compares the soul to a helpless child, a thirsty bird longing for rain, and iron waiting for the touch of the philosopher’s stone. Through these beautiful metaphors, she explains that when the soul sincerely turns toward God with love and surrender, Divine Compassion transforms and uplifts it. The overall mood of the Shabad is one of deep repentance, faith, longing, and complete trust in the Lord’s mercy.
