In this Shabad on Vairagya (detachment), Dayabai Ji reminds the soul about the temporary and uncertain nature of worldly life. She explains that no relationship, wealth, power, or worldly possession remains forever. Human beings stay connected mostly through self-interest, while time and death continue to move silently over all creation. By giving examples of kings, warriors, and powerful figures like Ravana and Duryodhana, she teaches that even the strongest cannot escape the power of time.
Shabad
Svaarath-bandhi jeev hai Raam naam chit joy.
everyone has a selfish motive. Keep your heart absorbed in the Lord's Nam.
Bahutak din beete britha ab bhajiye Raghubeer.
Says Daya: Many days have been wasted in futility; now devote yourself to the Lord.
Jaiso baas saraanay ko taiso yah jag hoy.
just as one stays at an inn, your sojourn in this world is temporary.
Binasi jaay chhin ek mein 'Daya' Prabhu ur dhaar.
it perishes in an instant. Says Daya: Keep your heart absorbed in the Lord.
Aaj kaalh mein tum chalo 'Daya' hohu husiyaar.
Cautions Daya, be vigilant you too will leave in a day or two.
Haath jhaad reete gaye bhayo kaal ko jor.
you will still leave empty-handed when Kal forces you to depart.
Maar liye sab kaal ne aise 'Daya' kahant.
thus, declares Daya, Kal destroyed them all.
'दया' काल परचंड है मारै सब कूँ घेर॥
'Daya' kaal parachand hai maarai sab kun gher.
Says Daya: Kal is really formidable, he rounds up everyone and kills them.
'दया' भजन नौका बिना उपजि उपजि मरि जाहिं॥
'Daya' bhajan nauka bina upaji upaji mari jaahin.
without the boat of meditation, O Daya, they repeatedly take birth and perish.
Deen jaani keenhi daya mo par bhaye dayaal.
Knowing me to be lowly, in his mercy he has showered his grace on me.
