Bairaag Ka Ang ('Daya Kunwar' Ya Jagat Mein)

Sewadar

In this Shabad on Vairagya (detachment), Dayabai Ji reminds the soul about the temporary and uncertain nature of worldly life. She explains that no relationship, wealth, power, or worldly possession remains forever. Human beings stay connected mostly through self-interest, while time and death continue to move silently over all creation. By giving examples of kings, warriors, and powerful figures like Ravana and Duryodhana, she teaches that even the strongest cannot escape the power of time.

'दया कुंवर' या जक्त में नहीं आपना कोय।
स्वारथ-बंधी जीव है राम नाम चित जोय॥
'Daya kunvar' ya jakt mein nahin aapna koy,
Svaarath-bandhi jeev hai Raam naam chit joy.
In this world, says Daya Kunwar; no one belongs to you;
everyone has a selfish motive. Keep your heart absorbed in the Lord's Nam.
'दया' सुपन संसार में ना पचि मरिये बीर।
बहुतक दिन बीते बृथा अब भजिये रघुबीर॥
'Daya' supan sansaar mein na pachi mariye beer,
Bahutak din beete britha ab bhajiye Raghubeer.
O brother, in this dreamlike world, do not entangle yourself and squander your life in vain.
Says Daya: Many days have been wasted in futility; now devote yourself to the Lord.
'दया कुँवर' या जक्त में नहीं रह्यो थिर कोय।
जैसो बास सराँय को तैसो यह जग होय॥
'Daya kunvar' ya jakt mein nahin rahyo thir koy,
Jaiso baas saraanay ko taiso yah jag hoy.
O Daya Kunwar, no one has lived in this world forever;
just as one stays at an inn, your sojourn in this world is temporary.
Jaiso moti os ka taiso yah sansaar,
Binasi jaay chhin ek mein 'Daya' Prabhu ur dhaar.
Like the fleeting existence of a dewdrop, this world is transitory;
it perishes in an instant. Says Daya: Keep your heart absorbed in the Lord.
Taat maat tumhare gaye tum bhi bhaye tayaar,
Aaj kaalh mein tum chalo 'Daya' hohu husiyaar.
Your father and mother have already left; you too are getting ready to depart.
Cautions Daya, be vigilant you too will leave in a day or two.
Asu gaj aru kanchan 'Daya' jore laakh karor,
Haath jhaad reete gaye bhayo kaal ko jor.
Even if you acquire horses, elephants, and gold or amass millions, says Daya,
you will still leave empty-handed when Kal forces you to depart.
Raavan Kumbhakaran gaye Durajodhan balavant,
Maar liye sab kaal ne aise 'Daya' kahant.
Ravan departed, Kumbhkaran left, even mighty Duryodhan had to leave;
thus, declares Daya, Kal destroyed them all.
Teen lok nau khand ke liye jeev sab her,
'Daya' kaal parachand hai maarai sab kun gher.
He hunts down all beings in the three worlds and nine regions.
Says Daya: Kal is really formidable, he rounds up everyone and kills them.
Bahe jaat hain jeev sab kaal nadi ke maahin,
'Daya' bhajan nauka bina upaji upaji mari jaahin.
All beings are dragged by the current of the ever-flowing river of death;
without the boat of meditation, O Daya, they repeatedly take birth and perish.
Charandaas Satgur mile samarath param dayaal,
Deen jaani keenhi daya mo par bhaye dayaal.
I met Charandas, my Satguru; he is almighty and extremely forgiving.
Knowing me to be lowly, in his mercy he has showered his grace on me.
