In this Shabad, Dayabai Ji beautifully and deeply explains the greatness of the True Guru (Satguru). She says that in this world, no one is as generous, compassionate, and capable of liberating souls as the Guru. The Guru does not merely provide worldly knowledge but shows the soul the path to cross the ocean of birth and death. By developing love, faith, and surrender at the Guru’s feet, a person’s confusion, fear, and attachment gradually disappear.

Guru's Glory
सतगुरु सम कोउ है नहीं या जग में दातार।
देत दान उपदेस सों करैं जीव भव पार॥
Satguru sam kou hai nahin ya jag mein daataar,
Det daan upades son karain jeev bhav paar.
No one in this world is as benevolent as the Satguru;
he bestows the blessing of his teachings and ferries the souls across the ocean of existence.
या जग में कोउ है नहीं गुरु सम दीन-दयाल।
सरनागत कूँ जानि कै भले करैं प्रतिपाल॥
Ya jag mein kou hai nahin guru sam deen-dayaal,
Saranaagat kun jaani kai bhale karain pratipaal.
No one in this world is as merciful as the Master;
he nurtures and protects all those who seek refuge in him.
मनसा बाचा करि 'दया' गुरु चरनौं चित लाव।
जग समुद्र के तरन कूँ नाहिन आन उपाव॥
Mansa baacha kari 'Daya' guru charanoun chit laav,
Jag samudra ke taran kun naahin aan upaav.
With mind, speech, and body, devote yourself to the Master's lotus feet, O Daya;
there is no other way to cross the ocean of existence.
चरन कमल गुरुदेव के जे सेवत हित लाय।
'दया' अमरपुर जात हैं जग सुपनो बिसराय॥
Charan kamal Gurudev ke je sevat hit laay,
'Daya' amarpur jaat hain jag supano bisaraay.
Those who lovingly devote themselves to the lotus feet of the Master,
says Daya, attain the eternal abode, leaving behind the dreamlike world.
नित प्रति बंदन कीजिये गुरु कूँ सीस नवाय।
'दया' सुखी कर देत हैं हरि सरूप दरसाय॥
Nit prati bandan keejiye guru kun sees navaay,
'Daya' sukhi kar det hain Hari saroop darasaay.
With your head bowed in reverence, devote yourself to the Master every day;
he will grant ultimate bliss, O Daya, by revealing the Lord within.

गुरु बिन ज्ञान ध्यान नहिं होवै।
गुरु बिन चौरासी मग जोवै॥
Guru bin gyaan dhyaan nahin hovai,
Guru bin chauraasi mag jovai.
Without the Master, there is no knowledge, no contemplation.
Without the Master, one continues on the path of transmigration.
गुरु बिन राम भक्ति नहिं जागै।
गुरु बिन असुभ कर्म नहिं त्यागै॥
Guru bin Raam bhakti nahin jaagai,
Guru bin asubh karm nahin tyaagai.
Without the Master, devotion for the Lord is not awakened.
Without the Master, one cannot abandon evil acts.
गुरु ही दीन-दयाल गोसाईं।
गुरु सरनै जो कोई जाई॥
Guru hi deen-dayaal gosaain,
Guru saranai jo koi jaai.
Only the Master is merciful to the meek; he is the ever-gracious Lord.
Those who seek refuge in the Master
पलटैं करैं कागू सूँ हंसा।
मन को मेटत हैं सब संसा॥
Palatain karain kaagu sun hansa,
Man ko metat hain sab sansa.
are transformed from crows to swans
and all doubts are dispelled from their minds.
गुरु हैं सब देवन के देवा।
गुरु को कोउ न जानत भेवा॥
Guru hain sab devan ke deva,
Guru ko kou na jaanat bheva.
The Master is the Lord of all gods;
no one can fathom the mystery of the Master.
करुना-सागर कृपा-निधाना।
गुरु हैं ब्रह्म रूप भगवाना॥
Karuna-saagar kripa-nidhaana,
Guru hain brahm roop Bhagavaana.
The ocean of mercy, the fountainhead of compassion,
the Master is the Lord.
हानि लाभ दोउ सम करि जानैं।
हृदै ग्रंथ नीकी बिधि भानैं॥
Haani laabh dou sam kari jaanain,
Hriday granth neeki bidhi bhaanain.
Good and bad, he regards both alike;
he eases out the knots of one's heart.
दै उपदेस करैं भ्रम नासा।
"दया" देत सुख-सागर बासा॥
Dai upades karain bhram naasa,
"Daya" det sukh-saagar baasa.
He imparts the teachings and removes ignorance;
O Daya, he merges one in the ocean of bliss.
गुरु को अहि निसि ध्यान जो करिये।
बिधिवत सेवा में अनुसरिये॥
Guru ko ahi nisi dhyaan jo kariye,
Bidhivat seva mein anusariye.
Day and night, contemplate on the Master's form.
be in his service with diligence.
तन मन सूँ अज्ञा में रहिये।
गुरु अज्ञा बिन कछू न करिये॥
Tan man sun agya mein rahiye,
Guru agya bin kachhu na kariye.
Submit your mind and body to his will;
do not go against the will of the Master.
गुरु अज्ञा मेटीजै नाहीं।
भावै देह पात ह्वै जाहीं॥
Guru agya metijai naahin,
Bhaavai deh paat hvai jaahin.
Do not disregard the will of the Master
even if you have to sacrifice your life.
होय गुरमुखी जग में रहै।
सिर पर सीत ऊस्न सब सहै॥
Hoy gurmukhi jag mein rahai,
Sir par seet oosn sab sahai.
While living in this world, accept everything as the will of the Master,
be it heat or cold.

तिन के पुन्न प्रताप ते, आनंद रूपी होय॥
Agya-kaari gurmukhi, jo aisa sish hoy,
Tin ke punn prataap te, aanand roopi hoy.
If a disciple is obedient and devoted,
with the grace of the Master, he attains eternal bliss.

Spiritual Insight

The central message of this divine teaching is that without the Guru, true wisdom cannot be attained, devotion does not awaken, and the impurities of the mind cannot be removed. Living according to the Guru’s command, serving with humility, and constantly remembering the Guru are described as the highest duties of a spiritual seeker. Dayabai Ji teaches that the disciple who sincerely takes refuge in the Guru with complete faith and humility experiences inner peace, divine joy, and closeness to God.
